An Introduction to a Bibliophile

Hi everyone,

For my third post, I will now introduce myself to all of you!

My name is Tyler, and I am a senior currently slated to graduate this semester with a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering. And, since I know that major probably sounds boring to some, I'll try to make it sound a bit more interesting. Basically, us BMEs get to be involved in a wide variety of areas in the medical field: prosthetics, heart devices, insulin pumps, pharmaceuticals, and probably many more I can't remember. I personally am involved in the device industry, and will be working with a device company after I graduate.

When I am not in school, I am, as I have mentioned in previous posts, a big reader. My favorite genre is YA fantasy, though I am not opposed to reading other genres as well. This is actually why I have joined this class -- one of my favorite series is one that uses the tale of Durga as an inspirational plot point, and I am a big fan of it. (If anyone wants to look it up, its the Tiger's Curse Saga by Colleen Houck.) My favorite authors of all time are Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer L. Armentrout, though I am also a big fan of Leigh Bardugo and cannot wait for the Shadow and Bone series to premiere on Netflix this spring! If anyone who reads this knows any of these authors or other YA books and wants to talk about them, please don't hesitate because talking about books is probably my favorite thing besides reading them. I also love sharing book recs, so if you have any I'd love to hear them!

In addition to reading, I am a big Marvel and Star Wars fan. Captain Marvel is my favorite Marvel hero, and I even have a signed copy of a Captain Marvel comic that came out a couple of years ago! One of my favorite activities is to go to the movie theater with my Dad and watch the newest Star Wars or Marvel movie. When The Force Awakens came out, I can still remember how the audience was so excited to see Han, Leia, and Chewie again that the whole theater broke out into applause when they first appeared on screen. Personally, my favorite Star Wars character is Ahsoka Tano, so I am very much looking forward to her live action show that will be on Disney Plus in the near future.

Any time not spent reading or watching nerd shows/movies is likely spent with my friends and family. I have a great group of friends that I love to hang out and watch football games or play board games with, and I am very close to my family that live nearby.

As I mentioned above in regards to books, I love to talk about the things I love. If anyone ever wants to talk about books, the MCU (or comics), or anything similar, please reach out! And, thanks for reading about myself!

  1. Hello Tyler! Since you were so kind to post on my introduction, I thought that I would return the favor and post on yours! Thank you for the book recommendation, I will have to check it out after I finish my current read, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. It's an interesting book that I would not have found without a recommendation from someone else, but I'm really liking it so far! I have also read the Tiger's Curse series, but I can't remember too much about it now (I think I read it in junior high? I feel old now...) It's so cool that you're taking this class because of the series! I just wanted to say that the background on your blog is stunning, I really want to travel to Scotland someday. What was your favorite thing about Scotland?

  2. Hi Tyler! Based on your major, it sounds like you are really smart! And while I am sure I would find many of the classes you have to take boring, your future career field actually sounds really interesting. I would love to know and understand all of the science behind those things, seeing as those are the devices that save lives. I am sure that you are really enjoying this class so far based on your interests! I wish that I loved to read more, but sadly I lost that passion once reading became required in school. We do not have much in common, but I admire your career path and wish you luck in the future!

  3. Hi Tyler! First of all, I think your major is super cool, and it is one I was considering coming into college (I am a pre-med senior, so if med school works out, I will hopefully get to work with many biomedical engineers in my career.) I also love Star Wars and Marvel, and I grew up watching Star Wars with my Dad as well! I also literally used that same image of the Star Wars logo in one of my blog posts, lol.

  4. Oh, that is so cool to learn about Tiger's Curse Saga, Tyler: this is new to me! I just checked, and they have an audiobook version, and my Audible credits roll over around the middle of the month: I put that on my list of books to snag. It looks fantastic! And of course there is a whole world of Indian stories that are just waiting for you to retell them in this class, with millions (not exaggerating) of gods and goddesses: you will never run out of story ideas in India! And mash-ups are also great: two people in class already have Storybooks up and running this semester: one is a Harry-Potter mash-up, and the other is going to be a Marvel-Avengers-inspired project. And hey, even board games are a big thing in ancient India: Traditional Indian Tabletop Games (you'll see a reference to the heroine of the Ramayana, Sita, in there). So: yay for stories AND for board games! :-)

  5. Hey Tyler! It’s always great to say hello to you, and I’m excited you’re in this class with me. I miss our adventures in Britain, and it’s crazy we’re about to graduate! I love your introduction. I think it’s so cool that we like similar books and movies (though I haven’t read the Tiger’s Curse series, maybe one day!). I am also INCREDIBLY excited about the Shadow and Bone show! I need to reread some of the books before it gets here. We should talk about the show or even get together and watch some when it comes out! (Also you are 100% correct, Ahsoka the best!)

  6. What's up Tyler! Reading this post answered my statement on your story post about what you like to read most! I must say, that is certainly an impressive major. Throughout high school I took a few preparatory engineering class, they were a lot of fun. I think it's awesome how you'll get to work with devices that can change (or even save) people's lives. Sounds like you will have an exciting and rewarding career!

  7. Hey Tyler,
Cool that you're biomedical engineering, I've heard fascinating things about Scott Sabloch Prosthetics and the ones he makes for olympians! I too am a big Marvel fan and Star Wars fan. How do you like WandaVision so far?! It's so interesting I just hope the action picks up a bit. Good luck with your endeavors post OU and good luck this semester!

  8. Hello Tyler, I think that it is really cool and interesting that you are a biomedical engineering major. All the different routes you can go with that is incredible and they all sound so fascinating. I’m not a big reader but I do have a little brother who is all about marvel. My brother always spoils the new movies for me, and we enjoy watching those movies together. Goodluck with the rest of the semester!

  9. Hi Tyler! I haven't heard of the book series you mention but I'm definitely putting it on my list now. As a former nanny and now mom to an 11 year old I have also found myself reading a lot of YA fiction - there are so many great choices! Congrats on graduating this spring - I am on track to do the same! It feels great to be so close. :)

  10. Hi Tyler!
I find your major to be super cool. I am a bio pre med major so hearing about what you are going to do is very intriguing to me! Unlike you I am not a very big fan of Star Wars, but I do love Marvel. I could find myself binging all the Marvel movies and never get tired! I hope you have a great and healthy rest of your semester!

  11. Hello,
As a premed major biomedical engineering sounds interesting! And yes, there is so much you can do with it and help people in so many different ways. I was actually interested in developing technology to help people who cannot speak, walk, hear, etc. It just goes to show many different opportunities are out there and how everyone can make such a big impact in the world. I wish you best and it was nice meeting you!

  12. Hi Tyler,
I'm a huge Star Wars fan too, I'm excited to hear that Ahsoka Tano is your favorite character, since she definitely ranks high in my tier list. I'm sure you've already seen the Mandalorian, and I'm hoping that the solo show for Ahsoka holds the same level of quality if not higher. I hope you have a great rest of your semester!

  13. Hi Tyler! I have heard of biomedical engineering but am glad to see your explanation! It sound like a really cool career path to take and I wish you luck! I love reading but I feel like I don't have much time to begin new series. I am also a huge marvel fan! I only remember Star Wars from when I was younger and my dad would have me watch the episodes with him. I enjoyed them but I never really followed it too much. I am also graduating this semester and I wish you luck!

  14. Hi Tyler!
I don't really know what to say in response since we've been living together for 3 years now. Now that I think about it, I don't think we have ever watched Star Wars together. I still haven't seen it. But we did have a lot of fun seeing Captain Marvel together for the first time! I can't wait to visit you after we graduate :)

  15. Hi Tyler!
I would LOVE some book recommendations! I am about to begin medical school in the fall so I feel like this summer will be my last chance to read for pleasure for a long time, haha! Sarah J. Maas is also one of my all-time top favorite authors. She and C.S. Lewis. Are there any books that you would suggest to a huge Throne of Glass fan?? Also, congrats on graduating as a biomedical engineering student! That is not easy!!
    Best,
    Rachel

  17. Hi Tyler,
I would like to start by saying that NO, your major is not a boring one and I'm pretty sure it's not an easy one too. But I appreciate people like you going into medical fields and specially in times like these, we know how important doctors are! Also, I really am putting off watching Star Wars, but your post makes me want to watch it! I'd let you know if I like it if
I did haha! Good luck with your career and I'm looking forward to reading your blog.

  18. Hi Tyler! I am also an avid reader of fantasy and fiction. I will definitely look into the recommendations that you gave! My all time favorite author is Terry Pratchett. I am currently reading a book called "Seven Blades in Black" and think that it is great! It had a noir-type feeling with mages, magic guns, and revolution. Its fantastic!
